3. Citrus Juices
Consuming citrus juices can also lead to the symptoms of heartburn. A recent study attempted to examine the causes of heartburn amongst 382 people suffering from this condition. The results revealed that nearly 67% of the participants suffered the symptoms of heartburn after drinking orange juice.
Another study that examined the causes of heartburn with a sample of 400 patients suffering from this condition revealed that 73% of the participants suffered from heartburn after consuming orange of grapefruit juice.
These results report that the concentration of acid present within citrus juices tends to trigger the symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux. However, researchers are still attempting to understand exactly how the consumption of citrus juices leads to heartburn.
It is strongly recommended to avoid drinking citrus juices when suffering from heartburn, like grapefruit, lemon and orange juice, as they can aggravate the symptoms of acid reflux.
Chocolate is another extremely common food item that can trigger the symptoms of heartburn. Like most other high-fat food items, chocolate also tends to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, and this allows the stomach acids to enter the esophagus and trigger the symptoms of heartburn.
Moreover, chocolate contains rich doses of cocoa, which is brimming with the happiness-inducing hormone serotonin. Research reveals that serotonin can also relax the lower esophageal sphincter and trigger heartburn.
Furthermore, chocolate is also loaded with rich doses of two compounds, caffeine and theobromine, which tend to stimulate the lower esophageal sphincter as well and make it overly relaxed. So, be sure to avoid consuming too much chocolate as its fat content and serotonin levels can trigger the painful symptoms of heartburn.
